Corey has spent over 25 years on the exhibition side of the film industry. Just prior to founding BeforeTheMovie he was Vice President of North American Cinemas, which operates some 150-movie theater screens in California and Nevada. Welcome to BeforeTheMovie.com.  This is an exciting time for us as our industry continues to explode.  Last year cinema audiences packed movie theatres to the tune of over 1.4 BILLION people which equates to over $10.6 BILLION at the box office.  There was something for everyone in 2009 as 507 films made their way to cineplexes.  Here is a breakdown of the most popular genres:

I expect much of the same in 2010 with studios releasing tent pole pictures that are sure to generate the same kind of attendance and dollars as in 2009.  This is a great time for small businesses to think outside the box and consider including cinema in their mix of advertising.  Traditional media remains expensive and much of it is less effective due to ad avoidance techniques practiced by consumers today.  Over 70% of consumers own a DVR and over 75% of them use it to skip over the advertisements.  Satellite radio, MP3 players and pop up blockers are just a few of the other ways they avoid listening or viewing commercials.  Newspapers are becoming less and less effective on their own because many people are getting their news elsewhere and advertisers are choosing motion over static imagery.
